Welcome to Birmingham

Why Birmingham?

As the capital of Central England, Birmingham has all the attractions you would expect of a modern, cosmopolitan city. With nightlife to rival that of any major city, world-class sporting facilities, a superb arts and cultural scene, international cuisine and excellent shopping facilities, Birmingham has something for everyone.

Birmingham is the UK’s Second City. Ever since the eighteenth century, it has been a major centre for manufacturing and industry, thanks in great part to its position at the hub of the country's transport network. It remains the largest centre of manufacturing in the UK, and with excellent connections to road, rail and air routes, it is a vital link in the national and international distribution network. Of late the city has enjoyed significant growth in the financial and professional services sectors, and has a rising reputation as one of the major centres for law in the UK outside of London.

The city's new confidence is apparent in the renewal of its historic areas and the creation of many major new developments, such as the world-renowned International Convention Centre and the National Indoor Arena. One of the landmark events in the transformation of the city has been the opening of The Bullring, one of Europe's most prestigious shopping destinations, incorporating the famous Selfridges building, whose stunning ultra-modern design has made it instantly recognisable.

The entertainment heart of Birmingham can be found along Broad Street and in the smart canalside area known as Brindleyplace, which boasts a wide variety of bars and restaurants. Nearby is the stylish new Mailbox, a complex of designer fashion and lifestyle stores, alongside chic café-bars and restaurants. Also on the canalside are the new Crescent Theatre, and the National Sea Life Centre. Within walking distance you will find cinemas, theatres, and art galleries, the National Indoor Arena, a world-class sporting and concert venue, and the International Convention Centre, incorporating Birmingham Symphony Hall, home to the world-renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

These bold new developments help to make Birmingham a city of exciting contrasts, a city that is down-to-earth and friendly, but cosmopolitan and sophisticated, that is proud of its history and heritage, but confidently facing towards the future. You will still find evidence of the city's historic roots and Victorian grandeur in some fine civic buildings, while the modern architecture of its shops, offices and hotels, and the luxury apartment developments that have reinvigorated the city centre of recent years signify a thriving urban economy.
