A member of the Thai Royal Household will be amongst international students learning English at the University of Central England in Birmingham this summer.

A scholarship for study on the Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes, designed to help students develop their academic written and verbal communication skills was presented to Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn recently.

The Princess will now decide which member of her household staff will most benefit from the training and send them to join up with other students in Birmingham later this year.

Professor Jo Andrews, Course Director for the Management, Design and Communication degree at Birmingham City University Institute of Art and Design (BIAD), has just returned from Thailand where she made the presentation to Princess Sirindhorn.

Jo, is a Visiting Professor to Thailand’s Royal Chulalongkorn University, in Bangkok and was chosen to make the presentation to the Royal Family because of her strong links with the country.

Jo said: “The presentations to the Royal Household are a high-profile, annual event attended by delegates from around the world and a variety of university scholarships were being presented.

“Birmingham City University already enjoys strong links within Thailand, particularly through BIAD, but this is the first time that the university has been offered the opportunity to take part. We were put forward by our international student recruitment agent there.

Another visiting academic for Birmingham City University was Mr Douglas Morley-Smith from the Technology Innovation Centre. He was able during various visits over the past few months to reach many Thai students and speak with them personally and advise them about the opportunities available to them.

Birmingham City University staff regularly visit Thailand. Visit our website and keep an eye out in local press for when they next visit your country.
