Guidance for International and EU Students with Disabilities

Birmingham City University welcomes applications from students with disabilities.

Your disability may be:

  • A sensory disability (e.g. deaf/hearing loss, blind/visual loss)
  • A mental health difficulty (e.g. depression)
  • A physical disability (e.g. wheelchair user, arthritis)
  • A specific learning difficulty, (e.g. dyslexia, dyscalculia)

Your application will be considered solely on academic merit , however it is helpful if we know in advance about any support requirements you may have. 

The Disability Team can assess your support requirements and the following may be available by the University at no additional cost to you:

  • Certain adaptations to the University’s accommodation – for example vibrating emergency alert systems, internet access or flats adapted for wheelchair users
  • Individual examination arrangements – such as extra time, modified papers, private rooms, and height-adjustable desks/chairs
  • Extra time for assignments/presentations and consideration may be given for spelling and grammar  
  • Extended library loans and reduced photocopying rates
  • Lecture materials available in advance
  • Permission to record lectures using a voice recording device
  • Access to equipment in resource centres and libraries within your Faculty, e.g. laptop/desktop computers equipped with computer programmes and assistive software e.g. Inspiration, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Text HELP Read & Write and Supernova screen magnification. Some study rooms are equipped with CCTV and height adjustable desks/chairs
  • Loan of certain equipment may be available, e.g., laptops equipped with computer programmes/assistive software (Inspiration, Dragon Naturally Speaking and Text Help Read & Write), voice recording devices, magnifiers. Please note, the University has very limited amounts of equipment it can loan and this service is subject to availability.
  • Referral to the Learner Development Unit for support with English Language skills
  • Confidential advice and support from the Disability Team

Other services are available at the University; however these are subject to availability and require funding. Disabled International students are not eligible for UK government funding (Disabled Students’ Allowance). Birmingham City University will make every effort to help you find funding for these types of support; however you or your sponsors may be asked to fund resources or equipment that you may require and that are not outlined above.

The following services require funding:

  • Personal care – e.g. assistance with shopping, dressing, cleaning etc
  • Study support workers – e.g. note takers, readers, mobility assistants
  • Sign language interpreters (British Sign Language)
  • 1 to 1 dyslexia/study skills tuition
  • Equipment e.g. wheelchairs, computers and recording devices
  • Extensive Brailling

If you need an adapted University residence we recommend you contact Accommodation Services as soon as possible to discuss your requirements. The Disability Team can assist and advise as required.
