- Outline planning application submitted to Birmingham City Council
- Major development of Birmingham’s Eastside
- Formal planning decision expected by end of December
Birmingham City University submitted an outline planning application on 27th June for its 55,000 square meter flagship development in Birmingham’s Eastside. The formal planning decision is not expected until end of December 2008.
Mary Martin, Pro Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham City University, is overseeing the development. She said: “The City Campus development is complementary to the regeneration of this side of the city which has been designated by AWM, the regional regeneration agency, as the ‘Learning & Leisure Quarter’. We hope to learn the Council’s response to our planning application by 30th September, and at the latest by end of December.”
The University’s plans for the 4.17 acre brown field site will cost in the region of £150m and will provide new facilities for the University’s Faculty of Performance Arts and Media, the Faculty of Technology, Innovation & Development; and Birmingham Institute of Art & Design (BIAD) and encompass existing buildings including Millennium Point. The plans also include for a concert hall, Student Centre, food court, retail centre and space for working with local businesses.
The first phase of the proposed building is expected to open to students in September 2012.
