Architecture celebrates its centenary
23rd May 2008
Birmingham School of Architecture will be holding a series of events to mark its centenary this year. The showpiece will be the Centenary Ball, will be held at the city’s Botanical Gardens in August.
The celebration will see past and present students, lecturers and friends of the School, which is part of Birmingham City University, joined by supporters from across the design and architecture industries to commemorate Birmingham School of Architecture. The School has a proud list of alumni that, until now, has never been fully recorded.
Tickets for the ball cost £55 and can be purchased by registering online at the Birmingham School of Architecture alumni site. On registration, members can edit their profiles, get in touch with other members and friends and network with those who work in the architectural industry. The Centenary Ball follows a series of lectures by a number of well-respected speakers from the world of architecture.
Plans and preparations to found Birmingham School of Architecture began in 1908 and the School was formally opened in 1909. Following the Birmingham School of Architecture’s establishment, it won Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) recognition in 1923 and 1930 to become of the major Schools of Architecture in the UK. Success led to affiliation with the University of Aston for a decade, although remaining part of the College of Art. On entry into Birmingham Polytechnic, the School became a leading department of the new Faculty of the Built Environment.
