Clearing 2008 just around the corner

5110/SA 11 th August 2008

For many students getting the job they want is the main reason they choose to take a university course - so a Birmingham University is asking students to seriously think about their choice of university before the A Level results are published next week.

Helen Staples is the Senior Adviser for Choices, Birmingham City University’s course information and guidance centre. She will spend the next few weeks encouraging students to make the right decision for them.

Helen said: "Firstly, don’t panic . Remember to keep calm; the right course for you is out there. We have a team of trained advisers just a phone call away who can help you find a place at Birmingham City University. Last year over 30,000 (that’s 1 in 5) university places were found through Clearing! You are certainly not alone and you have some excellent options awaiting you.

“One of the first things to do is look on the university websites to see what courses are around. Most universities will have a dedicated Clearing website. At Birmingham City University this is: www.bcu.ac.uk/clearing

"There are often three or four different ways you could channel your interest in any given subject. Each course will enable you to develop your interest and knowledge, whilst gathering skills which will be relevant to future employment. Do your research, think about the type of course you want to undertake and then search for those institutions that will accept the grades you are offering.

"At Birmingham City University our aim is to make sure that you are aware of all your options, so that you can choose the course that is right for you. At the same time we place a high value on employability.

“ Furthermore, I urge you to discuss your options with your family, tutor or careers adviser. Choosing what course to study is a pretty big decision, so it might help to talk it through with someone else.

“Remember though, at the end of the day, only you can make the decision. Use them as a sounding board but don’t be pushed into something you’re unsure about or don’t want to do. Your degree can influence not just the next few years but also your whole career so pick what’s right for you.”
