  • Designs to be made into ‘real watches’

  • Competition launched by international watch-making company

Students from the School of Jewellery at Birmingham City University are celebrating after scooping a number of prizes in a prestigious watch-design competition.

First year students on the BA Jewellery and Silversmithing degree have won prize money totalling £5,750 from national watch makers Dreamweaver Montres Sarl.

The most successful winner was Emma-Louise Darnell who scooped a total of £1,750 on prize money.  The 21 year old from Watford won first prize in the ‘sports watch’ category and second prize in the ‘dress watch’ category.

Dreamweaver Montres Sarl set the students the project to come up with three designs around the themes of sports, aviation and dress. The winning designs will eventually be made into watches that will be marketed under the ‘Felicitas’ brand name.

Terry Hunt, Deputy Head of the School of Jewellery, commented: “The School of Jewellery was pleased to be singled out by this company to help them move forward with their enterprise.  It indicates a tremendous expression of confidence in our students’ ability to deliver what was required. I am very pleased with the outcome and the opportunity it provided for students to extend their perception of the subject area.”

Uday Nayak, Chairman of Dreamweaver and a collector of fine watches, added: “We are impressed with the creativity brought forth by the Birmingham City students in their designs.  We will be talking to some of the winners about future work”.

Dreamweaver Montres Sarl also supported the School of Jewellery with a donation which will be invested in additional student resources.
