Birmingham City University hosts skills competition

5100/SA 21 st July 2008

This week nine competitors from across the country will take a 14-hour practical test at Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery to become the UK’s Jewellery Skill champion.

The jewellery trade has not been represented in the UK skills portfolio for a number of years and it is an accolade for the School to host this year’s competition.

Terry Hunt, Deputy Head of Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery, said: “It is appropriate that the University is associated with this competition as it reinforces the importance of skills training to the economy.”

Each competitor (including two former School of Jewellery students) has to be under the age of 25 and to be able to complete the manufacture of an unseen design in precious metal to exacting standards within the two day period.

The winner of the competition will be eligible to join the UK team that competes in the WorldSkills ‘Olympics’ in Calgary, Alberta, later this year.
