University lecturer set to star in reality crime show
5093/SA 4th July 2008
- Birmingham City University professor takes part in Channel 5 reality show
- Show set to tackle juvenile crime
- Professor will join panel of experts including David Blunkett
Former Prison Governor and Birmingham City University professor David Wilson is set to tackle juvenile crime in a new television series for Channel Five.
In what is billed by Five as a "bold social experiment", Banged Up will see a team of respected experts – including Professor Wilson - working with 12 prolific young teenage offenders to discourage them from following a life of crime following a stint in a simulated prison.
Prof Wilson will take on the role of Governor of the prison and will draw on his experience of 14 years working with young offenders. Former Home Secretary David Blunkett will head up the prison’s parole board.
The series, which will launch on our television screens on Monday (July 7th), aims to tackle the sensitive issue of juvenile behaviour and rehabilitation, working in conjunction with pupil referral units, charities, youth groups, community projects and parents.
Each young offender will be filmed as they attempt to rehabilitate themselves, with the series also featuring first-hand accounts and testimonies from former criminals.
Prof Wilson said: I’m delighted to offer my support and involvement and am hoping that my experience and understanding in this area will be invaluable to a fascinating social experiment tackling an issue that couldn't be more relevant.”
The four-part series will be aired on Monday evenings from July 7th on Channel 5.
