Prestigious national teaching award for Birmingham City University academic
5090/KB 26th June 2008
An academic at Birmingham City University has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy to recognise his teaching skills and to celebrate his outstanding impact on students’ learning experience.
The award is part of the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) and the overall programme to raise the status of learning and teaching in Higher Education. In total 50 Teaching Fellowships were awarded across England and Northern Ireland.
Nigel Wynne, Senior Academic in Learning and Teaching at the Faculty of Health at Birmingham City University , said: “I’m extremely honoured and proud to receive this award, and although it is categorised as an ‘individual award’ it is really an endorsement of the talent and creativity of others too.
“For me the award is also for the staff and students from both within the University and the NHS that I have had an opportunity to work with over the years
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work more closely with the Higher Education Academy and the other who have received Fellowships, to promote collaborative work across the HE sector and to further enhance my own teaching.”
One of the reasons Nigel has received this award is because of an innovative approach to team teaching that he and his colleagues pioneered called the Linked Teaching Initiative. This is where a community of practice has been created that supports health care professionals to develop and facilitate teaching sessions with academic staff.
Nigel’s creativity has led to the development of an online simulation tool called the Virtual Case Creator. This tool presents students with a wide range of real world, online scenarios that support decision making and problem solving. This online program has received funding from organisations such as Strategic Health Authority (West Midlands), the Digital University Consortium in Holland and the Interactive Digital Media project.
Each winner of a Teaching Fellowship will receive an award of £10,000 which can be used for their personal and/or professional development in teaching and learning.
