Health care graduates to scoop awards

5089/SA July 15th 2008

Excellence in health care education will be celebrated at Birmingham City University on Friday July 18 th when current and former students gather for the University’s annual Health Care Awards.

The Health Care Awards will look back over the past 12 months and celebrate student achievements and the exceptional role placement providers play in their education. The awards ceremony will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Chauhdry Rashid, the University’s Chancellor.

Student award winners will be chosen from more than 1,300 pre-registration graduates of the University’s Faculty of Health who either finished their courses earlier this year, or are due to complete in July.

A dozen student achievement awards in Radiography, Radiotherapy, Social Work, Midwifery, Speech and Language Therapy, Operating Department Practice and Nursing will recognise the greatest contribution made to each course.

Ten practice placement awards will celebrate outstanding contribution and support by wards, departments or individuals to students gaining real life experience and their influence on student development.

Professor Ian Blair, the Dean of Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Health, will present each winner with a specially commissioned award, designed and made at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham Institute of Art and Design. Iain said: “This year’s event builds on the success of the first award ceremony held last year, and is an excellent opportunity to recognise the achievements of our past students and highlight the support they receive in our partner organisations.”

One of the largest faculties of its kind in the UK, Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Health incorporates around 7,000 full and part-time students. The professions include nursing, midwifery, speech and language therapy, radiotherapy, social work and the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine.

A £30 million development at the Faculty’s Westbourne Road Campus was opened last year and includes the largest, specialist health education library in the country as well as mock operating theatres and wards where students can hone their skills in a simulated environment.

The 2008 awards ceremony will take place at Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Glasshouses in Edgbaston on Friday 18 th July. Proceedings will start at 12.00pm and end at 4.30pm.
