RP/5073 21 st May 2008

The best of Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) were celebrating last week following the announcement of the Ryland and Jackson art and design awards.

The event was hosted in the award-winning School of Jewellery, part of Birmingham City University, and comprised students from across BIAD who had been selected to exhibit their work for the judges.

The Louise Anne Ryland Award was established in 1876. Louisa was the chief contributor to the Birmingham Government School of Ornamental Art, on the corner of Edmund Street and Margaret Street, now known as Birmingham Institute of Art & Design and home to the School of Art.  She endowed a fund for student scholarships which is still being awarded annually. This year’s winners included:

Vickie Wood, BA Fine Art, 1st Prize

Johnathan Ollife, MA Jewellery, Silversmithing and Related Products, joint 2nd prize

Michelle Williams, Postgraduate Diploma Architecture, Joint 2nd prize

David Kilbourn, BA Textile Design, 3rd prize

George Jackson was a successful Birmingham Woollen Draper who established under his will in January 1696, a trust to enable undergraduate students within BIAD to compete for travel awards. This year’s winners included:

Samantha Evans, BA (Hons) Textile Design (Embroidery), 1st prize

Gareth Barnett , BA (Hons) Visual Communication (Illustration), joint 2nd prize

Lucie Kerley, BA (Hons) Visual Communication (Photography), joint 2nd prize

Amanda Pullin, HND Jewellery and Silversmithing, 3rd prize

Robert Potter, Chairman of the George Jackson Board of Trustees and Samantha Evans winner of the George Jackson award

George Jackson winner, 22 year-old Samantha Evans, based her project on a collection

of versatile, flat-pack, architectural hats. The innovative flat-pack designs use a unique collection of lace and net, enabling the wearer to carry the hat in their luggage without fear of causing damage. On unpacking, the hats are easy to use, and can be put together quickly and effectively, by folding, attaching and expanding the design. Samantha’s attention to detail in producing the hats was clear to all the judges, her use of digital-machine and hand embroidery techniques, creates a stunning final piece.

All the prize winners’ work can also be viewed at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design Summer Shows taking place between the 10 th and 22 nd June 2008. For further information on the shows, please contact Rebecca Prime on 0121 331 5878.
