Birmingham City University welcomes new Chancellor
SA/5067 3rd June 2008
Birmingham City University is delighted to announce that the new Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Chauhdry Rashid, is to be installed as its seventeenth Chancellor at a special ceremony to be held on Monday, 9th June at the Banqueting Suite at the Council House in Birmingham City Centre.
The installation of Councillor Rashid continues the tradition established in 1992 when the former Birmingham Polytechnic was granted University status and resolved to reflect its commitment to the City by installing the Lord Mayor as its Chancellor. Birmingham City University is one of only two institutions nationwide to have adopted this unique link with its local region.
Councillor Rashid succeeds Councillor Randal Brew OBE, who served as Chancellor of the University in 2007/2008.
The Installation Ceremony will be attended by approximately 80 guests comprising senior staff of the University, members of the University’s Board of Governors, Honorary Award Holders and members of the local business and education community.
