Graduate helps with radio station’s new look
SA/5061 1 st May 2008
A former Birmingham City University student has been helping a local radio station with a new look to help promote its Breakfast Show.
Ellie Gibbons, who graduated from the University’s Media Photography course last year, was commissioned to take a series of photographs for Birmingham based 100.7 Heart fm.
Ellie, who currently works in the University’s technical department, said: “The shoot was so much fun and was a great opportunity to build up my professional portfolio. It was a new challenge for me as I had to envisage the world of radio through the medium of photography. It was also a real buzz to see my work up on the station’s popular website!”
This project is another example of the close relationship between Heart fm and Birmingham City University. Luis Clark, Programme Director for 100.7 Heart fm, says the station is committed to helping young media students. He said: “Heart really values its involvement with Birmingham City University’s Department of Media and Communication. The continued relationship we have enables us to encourage and inform students who are interested in a career in the Media.
“As the Midlands’ leading commercial radio station, we like to take an active role in letting our team share their knowledge as it is a fantastic way of nurturing local talent. We are always pleased with the student’s enthusiasm, creativity and passion for being involved with Heart fm.”
Staff from the radio station regularly share their industry expertise across a wide cross section of the University’s media course modules, including Public Relations, Commercial Production and Radio Production courses.
Heart fm also provides essential work experience for young broadcasters, such as part-time Technical Operator positions.
Sam Coley, Radio Degree Leader, added: “Everyone at Heart fm has been incredibly helpful. They genuinely want our students to succeed and go the extra mile by making themselves available as mentors, attending graduate showcases and even taking the students on guided tours of the station’s facilities. We place a great deal of importance on industry links - so our relationship with Heart fm is highly valued.”
