Four Birmingham City University students are celebrating after becoming runners up in a national debating competition.

Adam Care, Jessen Coppen, Dale Hedges and Christopher Lee are second year students from the University’s IT Management for Business (ITMB) course. They fought stiff competition from students from five UK universities to scoop cash prizes in the annual debating competition which is run by e-skills UK, the Sector Skills Council for IT & Telecoms.

The subject of the debate was ‘Who throughout history has made the most significant contribution to the progression of IT.’ Birmingham City University students selected Alan Turing .

Andrew Hollyhead, Course Director in the Department of Computing said: “ The subject of the debate was ‘Who throughout history has made the most significant contribution to the progression of IT.’ Our team selected Alan Turing .

“The group worked hard on their debate and their success is testament to their efforts. We were even more delighted when Andrew Hodges - Alan Turing's biographer - also sent his congratulations to the students.”

Adam Care, one of the members of the debating team, added: “We really had to sell the message that we were trying to get across to the judging panel but it seemed to work. I thought we did extremely well but we were disappointed not to come first.”
