Youngster’s dreams come true as they make their way to the red carpet

Top ten success for University in national teacher training guide
A national training guide has named Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Education a top ten provider of teacher training. The University scored seventh place success for secondary school and ninth for primary school training in the Good Teacher Training Guide 2008.

Birmingham architect elected first ever female president of RIBA
Local architect and academic, Ruth Reed, has been elected the next President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
The achievement is particularly notable as not only is she the first ever female president of the Institute but also the first in living memory to be elected from the West Midlands region. She will become President Elect on 1 September 2008 and will succeed the current President, Sunand Prasad, on 1 September 2009.

University celebrates double Ofsted success
Teacher training at Birmingham City University goes from strength to strength. After achieving grade 1 ‘Outstanding’ scores for its secondary teacher training courses just three weeks ago the University has now been recognised by Ofsted for the quality of its primary teacher training. Ofsted has awarded the University grade 1 ‘Outstanding’ scores for the quality of training and the management and quality assurance of the training it provides for new primary school teachers. This latest endorsement confirms the University’s status as a Category A provider of both secondary and primary teacher training – very few providers in the country manage to achieve this standard. Category A is the highest grade awarded by the Training and Development Agency (TDA) for the quality of teacher training.

Logistics Academy for the West Midlands concept launch at Birmingham City University's Technology Innovation Centre
Birmingham City University was selected as the launch pad for a skills delivery infrastructure proposal, on behalf of Skills for Logistics (SfL) – an employer-led, national, Sector Skills Council. Some 30 professionals from the supply chain, logistics and transport management fields, assembled in the University’s Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) to hear SfL’s proposal for a ‘one-stop-shop’ academy to meet the skills needs among the region’s logistics employers.

Mike’s design skills drive his Black Country career
Walsall’s Mike Beese is home grown talent, nurtured through a Midlands university-education, and now making a valuable contribution to the local economy.
Joining Kingswinford-based Westfield Sportscars, whilst still a student at Birmingham City University’s Technology Innovation Centre (TIC), Mike Beese became part of a three-man team working on an exciting project to design a chassis for a new race-car. He was employed to apply skills, gained on TIC’s computer-aided design, BSc course, to a vehicle chassis which is the basis of the UK’s first ever electric race-car series. The resulting design, complete with 75 kw power motor, made its debut at 2008’s Autosport International Show at Birmingham’s NEC.

Siamo Qui - We are here
The students of the MA Jewellery, Silversmithing and Related Product and their course director represented the School of Jewellery at SIAMO QUI, an international exhibition, symposium and educational forum in Florence. They exhibited LIFELINES a large-scale installation project that was especially made to represent the polyphonous attitude and design philosophy at the School of Jewellery, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, Birmingham City University.

Channel 5 asks Birmingham City University students and lecturers for their verdict on ‘The Gadget Show’
Several students from Birmingham City University have completed filming for a feature on Channel 5’s The Gadget Show and will soon be appearing on televisions across the country. The programme, which will go out on 5 May, at 8pm, is an hour-long show presented by Jason Bradbury, Suzi Perry and Jon Bentley, which road-tests the latest consumer technology in a series of entertaining challenges and features.

Birmingham City University wins £171K funding to lead NHS West Midlands simulation project

Learning in virtual environments goes LiVE at Birmingham City University
A Birmingham City University project is researching the use of a three-dimensional, virtual environment for learning and assessment. The Learning in Virtual Environments (LiVE) project will see students undertake film production exercises, using the internet-based virtual world, ‘Second Life’.

Research by two Birmingham City University academics has uncovered the extent of so-called “contract cheating” by students.
Contract cheating - the process by which students get others to complete their coursework for them by putting it out to tender - makes use of legitimate websites normally used by business, offering freelance project work or tutorial sites specifically set up for the purpose. The typical cost of an assignment undertaken in this way is between £5 and £50.

This weekend saw Rhydian Roberts’ fans, from Birmingham Conservatoire Junior School, officially launch t-shirts bearing his name, to help raise money for charity. Rhydian originally went on the X-Factor to raise the profile of Crossroads, a charity for which his mother works, which has inspired this initiative.

The NTI in Birmingham, part of Birmingham City University, has won a prestigious award from the Institute of IT Training (IITT). The NTI in Birmingham was awarded Learning Facilities of the Year 2008, in recognition of both the excellent facilities and the top class customer service. The award was presented by Sky News reader Lucy Alexander during the official awards ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel, London on Friday 15 th February 2008 in front of a capacity audience of over 450 training industry professionals.

Lord Bragg of Wigton awarded Honorary Doctorate by Birmingham City University
Lord Bragg of Wigton, known to millions as writer and arts broadcaster Melvyn Bragg, was presented with an Honorary Doctorate by Birmingham City University, on February 15.
A familiar face on British television as editor and presenter of The South Bank Show, and an award winning author of both fiction and non-fiction, Lord Bragg is also the Honorary President of the National Academy of Writing, which has its home at Birmingham City University.

Competition to design a car for the world’s first one make electric vehicle race series
Design students from universities, further education colleges and senior streams of secondary schools will be invited to enter a competition to design the body for the world’s first one-make electric vehicle race series. The competition will be launched on press day at Autosport International on the Niche Vehicle Network Stand No. 6230 at the NEC on January 10th.
