“the new City Centre campus will offer exceptional new learning and teaching facilities and will be a showcase of excellent modern design”

Why build it?

Mary MartinMary Martin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor – Corporate Development, who is overseeing the development, said:

"The University’s ambition in 10 years’ time is to have achieved a national and international reputation for the excellence of our teaching, the exemplary nature of our engagement with business, the professions and the community and for the quality of our research.

“To achieve this ambition it is necessary to build upon existing achievements. We need to create new areas of excellence and invest in our infrastructure, facilities and business processes to meet the expectations of our students, customers and partners.

”We very much hope that anyone with an interest in the Eastside development will take the opportunity to examine what we’re proposing. Although it’s far too early to say exactly what the development will look like, the exhibition gives an insight into the sort of ideas that might form part of this exciting development."

The development is complementary to the regeneration of this side of the city.

The new campus, together with the existing Millennium Point and developments including City Park Gate, Masshouse, Curzon Park and Ventureeast (CRCT) will progress to establish a new mixed use environment focused on learning and leisure.

This is an opportunity to create a very special location focused on arts and technology with an international reputation (including creative and performing arts; technology and design; construction and media).

Students will study in a state-of-the-art building with some of the UK’s best educational facilities. We will create a space which will inspire teaching, learning, research and knowledge transfer.

Through a process of consultation, those who will use the buildings will be able to help shape them.

Through this development, the University will continue to support the Regional Economic Strategy and work closely with employers and commercial organisations, especially from the Creative Industries sector.

Advantage West Midlands has designated this area the Learning & Leisure Quarter. Eastside is Birmingham's biggest city centre regeneration project and Birmingham City University will be at the heart of it

Campus design will include a new Birmingham Conservatoire building with a concert hall and the University’s Skillset Media Academy. It is a major plank in the achievement of our plans to grow the University by 50 per cent over the next 10 years.

We will create a fully-accessible space which will inspire teaching, learning, research and knowledge transfer and be connected to the surrounding developments and the city.

The building will be sustainable in terms of design, specification, during construction and in occupation; will minimise energy consumption; will use innovative technologies and will conserve water.

The new City Centre Campus for Birmingham City University will relate, connect and interact with the proposed City Park which links together Park Street along the front of Millennium Point to the Digbeth Branch Canal.

The University welcomes comments from both the local and wider community on the contents of these proposals.
